What was Moldova?

Archaeological discoveries say that the Moldavians are an ancient people. The first people were attested in this region precisely in the Stone Age. And the beautiful local occupation of pottery dates back to the Copper Age, when the Cucuteni-Tripoli culture flourished.

At the beginning of the Middle Ages, the territory was populated by the Dacian tribes romanized by the emperor Trajan. From here are the roots of the world and culture of the Roman Empire.

In 1359 Voivode Bogdan I founded the feudal state of Moldova, which is located between the Carpathian Mountains, the Dniester River, the Danube and the Black Sea.

If you want to conquer the Moldavians, tell them you’ve heard of Stephen the Great. He is the most important figure in local history and reigned between the years
1457-1504.

"Where is Moldova"?

We are a small country in South-Eastern Europe. Our neighbors are Romania and Ukraine. Most of the territory of the Republic of Moldova lies between two rivers: Dniester and Prut.

When is the best time to visit Moldova?

Anytime! Summers are long and hot, and winters are relatively mild and dry. In January, the mercury in thermometers rarely drops below -4 °C for a long time. The highest rainfall occurs in early summer and in October. It doesn’t rain often in Moldova, but when it rains, watch!

What soils do we have?

We have a black, mineral-rich soil that we call chernozem. Thanks to our fertile land, Moldova was also nicknamed the “Garden of the Soviet Union”, feeding all the other Soviet republics with the tastiest fruits and vegetables.

Are you passionate about cultures?

What are Codes?

The forests of Moldova, inhabited by deer, foxes, wild cats and hundreds of bird species, are called Codri. Once upon a time, we had not one Robin Hood hero, defending the poor, but several. And they were called Outlaws. They were hiding in Codri, where no one could catch them.

If you like landscapes with vineyards, huge fields of sunflowers, rape or wheat, then Moldova is the perfect destination for your trip.

A welcoming country

The population of Moldova is about 3 million inhabitants. So we have plenty of room for guests! Once you arrive in Moldova, you will have the opportunity, on a territory of only 33,843 km2, to see how several ethnic groups coexist: Romanians, Russians, Ukrainians, Gagauz, Bulgarians, Roma and Jews.

More than half of the country’s population speaks Romanian. If you know how to say “Hello! Thank you! To live! Happy Birthday!” – you are welcome in any house. And if you still know that our greatest poet is Mihai Eminescu – your glass of wine is guaranteed upon entering the house. The Romanian language is currently spoken only in the Republic of Moldova and Romania. For Moldovans, August 31 is an important holiday, when they celebrate the Romanian language. So, enjoy having this opportunity to be in a country with such a beautiful and rare language.

The Russian language is currently the second most widespread language in Moldova. It was given the status of “language of inter-ethnic communication” (alongside the official language). Ukrainian, Gagauz and Bulgarian languages are spoken to a lesser extent. Due to the large number of Gagauz and Ukrainian speakers, these languages were given official status in Gagauzia and Transnistria respectively.

Moldovans have the greatest trust in the church. So don’t be surprised when you see a sumptuous church at every corner of Chisinau’s neighborhood. Moldovans consider themselves Christians, go to church, observe the fasts and holidays in the religious calendar, Easter and Christmas being by far the most important holidays in Moldova. But, remember! We celebrate two Christmases and two New Year’s Eves – new style and old style. And we don’t mind that at all. Because we are a party people and we even have a saying: Better two meals than one fight!

Good to know !

In Moldova, 2 religious calendars are observed: Orthodox of the old style and Orthodox of the new style. The church follows the old calendar, and a good part of the population observes holidays according to both calendars. Thus, 2 Christmases and 2 New Years are celebrated in Moldova.

Romanian and Russian are spoken in Moldova. The young population speaks English and French. That is why it is advisable to have a Romanian or Russian language dictionary with you to be able to get in touch with the local population.

People on the street don’t smile much. But that’s until the moment I meet you. Moldovans are quite a friendly people and hospitable to guests. Just let them be their guest and they’ll open the door for you, spread the table for you, bring out the best in your beer and make you feast 3 days in a row.

The most important national holidays are August 27 – Independence Day and August 31 – Romanian Language Day.

The Moldovans are a people who declare themselves to be deeply religious. According to the latest polls, about 86% of the population declare themselves Christians.

It is not customary for Moldovans to visit empty-handed. This is how we are used to, to bring the hosts either sweets, or a bottle of wine, or other gifts.
